Once a serene valley filled with lush forests and endless starlight, Shadowmoon Valley transformed into a demonic wasteland when the Dark Portal opened to release Kil'jaeden's monstrosities under the leadership of the elf-demon hybrid Illidan Stormrage. A sky once filled with beautiful hues of purple and blue is now a perpetually lit ghastly green flame. The ambient and haunting music of this area captures the grim demonic transformation of a once prosperous zone.
When you first walk into this desolate yet eerie valley, you are hit with the low moans and chanting sounds of all the broken Draenei and spirits who have perished at the hands of the Burning Legion. The mix of the deep choral drones with the sharp metallic ambient sounds give you a glimpse of how the powerful molten fel energy absorbed this Outland landscape.
The lack of a strong melodic theme gives a feeling that this zone is deserted and empty, but the recurring long vocal motives give a hint that some sort of civilization exists in the form of Illidan's Black Temple to the east. As you keep wandering around this volcanic wasteland, you can hear the slight tune of a quiet melodic windchime clashing with dark moans and wind noise. The chime's soft sound gives a sign of hope that Maiev Shadowsong might be released from the nearby prison to stop Illidan's evil reign of terror. If you choose to further your exploration of this barren valley, you will hear a slow low brass ascending scale and more loud grieving vocals near the green lava volcano: the Hand of Gul'dan.
The minimal percussive ambient sounds mixed with the consistent slow vocal moans and wails perfectly paint the dark and desolate demonic wasteland of Shadowmoon Valley
