The Stonetalon Mountains are a forested mountain range within Central Kalimdor. Stonetalon Peak itself acts a sacred haven for the tauren and night elves, the latter of which have established outposts towards the peak to communicate the spirits of nature. The tauren themselves occupy a more central location at Sun Rock Retreat. Some of the more densely-populated forest areas have suffered greatly at the hands of the Venture Trading Company, whose mass deforestation has blighted the land and attracted numerous wild beasts.
The music for Stonetalon Mountains mainly consists of a lingering ‘cello melodic fragment and subtle harp broken chords over a brooding homogenous brass harmony. Composer David Arkenstone told Music of Warcraft a little bit more about the composition process of Stonetalon Mountains:
‘With Stonetalon, I tried to capture a mix of the beauty of the landscape and lurking danger from several sources. I used cello and low flutes to attempt to illustrate the contrasts. I also didn't want any 'resolution' so there would always be an edge.’
This lack of resolution is a key proponent of what makes the music for Stonetalon so unsettling, leaving players on edge as they explore the ragged land. However, the subtle beauty of the discrete harp fragments effectively contrasts the sense of danger that Arkenstone successfully creates, and reflect the beautiful verdant grass lands towards Stonetalon Peak.
