Azuremyst Isle is one of two formerly uninhabited islands off the coast of northwest Kalimdor. It was largely untouched by Kalimdor inhabitants until the arrival of the Draenei, uncorrupted holy descendants of the demonic eredar, whose inter-dimensional ship crashed on the western side of the island. The remnants of the ship have since been modified to construct the Draenei capital, The Exodar. While the island possesses a natural beauty, crystalline shards from the damaged vessel have spread across Azuremyst, corrupting the local flora and wildlife.
Azuremyst presents an extremely ambient soundscape, populated by a dense texture of slow evolving synth pads and tribal-sounding woodwind and percussion buried in reverberation effects. Any sense of time is lost within this thicket of sound which includes a free-time hand drum foundation, synthetic harp broken chords and tapestry of flute melodies, inspired by what is known as a tetratonic scale, which is commonly associated with ‘primitive’ spiritual music.
One of the most notable instruments is the Armenian duduk which has a very distinctive ‘Eastern’ vocal tone – this slight departure from the conventional orchestral sound is enough to give Azuremyst’s sonic pallet a slightly exotic and mysterious flavour. The tribal ambience of the music perfectly reflects the ancient heritage of the Draenei race and their simple spiritual connections to the light.
