The Wetlands are a vast marshland situated on the western coast of southern Eastern Kingdoms. Its proximity to Ironforge and coastal location unfortunately make it a prime target for invading forces. In fact, the mighty dwarven edifices which once populated the region have all been reduced to rubble following decades of war. In recent years, the Alliance have constructed Menethil Harbor to the southwest in memory of the late King Terenas, which acts as a transport hub to both Kalimdor and Northrend. However, following the cataclysm and the destruction of the Stonewrought Dam, the Wetlands are now somewhat wetter. While the docks at Menethil Harbour are still functional, the rest of the port was severely damaged and is now strewn with sandbags and slow repair efforts. The rest of the marshland was almost completely flooded by Loch Modan, and the region remains cloaked by mist and overcast skies.
Like its swampy cousin, Dustwallow Marsh, to the west, and its continental counterpart, Swamp of Sorrows, The Wetlands' sonic landscape is constructed from several variations of the track 'Soggy Place', composed by Derek Duke. Growling low brass lines combine with atmospheric synthesiser pads to create a fetid, viscous ambience; the perfect accompaniment to the perpetual fog that encompasses the region. While a solitary horn often attempts to break free from the thick texture, it is turbulent and discordant in nature. These lines in general are hesitant to develop and often remain stagnant, much like the pools of standing water which dominate the landscape. Thunderous percussion occasionally pierces through the dirge, serving as a reminder of the illustrious history of conflict that has plagued the region. Dukes’ affinity for exotic instrumentation is evident here as it is in Dustwallow Marsh and Swamp of Sorrows, with the occasional pan flute providing a certain primeval or primitive element to sonic pallet and the surrounding landscape.
