Draenor is homeland of the orcs and the last refuge of the Eredar descendent draenei. Following the atrocities Garrosh Hellscream committed in Pandaria, he is overthrown as Warchief of the Horde by combined Alliance-Horde forces. However, with the aid of an unknown ally, Hellscream escapes captivity and travels back in time to Draenor to a time before the orcs were corrupted by the blood of Mannoroth, before the events of the First War. With technology brought from the present, Garrosh plans to unite the past clans to create an 'Iron Horde' and lay siege to the present day Azeroth.
In approaching the musical composition for this unique premise, the Blizzard Audio team found themselves with the unique task of not only captured the plethora of heavy machinery the Iron Horde possesses, but also the varied landscapes and creatures of this infamous region. Mists of Pandaria brought the total of unique musical composition in World of Warcraft to an impressive 52 hours; players expected new diverse cues in Warlords of Draenor to add to their playlists, given the large amount of similar content from its predecessor. The splintering of the Horde needed to be portrayed effectively through music, and this was handled expertly by a team of seven composers who successfully breathe life into Draenor and the Iron Horde. The impressive machinery the Iron Horde wield could not be adequately brought to life with standard foley, and so the audio team found innovative ways of combining unorthodox metallic sounds to portray the deadliness of these lumbering monstrosities.
The soundtrack for Draenor introduced more contemporary influences and metres, unconventional instrumentation and playing techniques. The Official Blizzard website boasts 'turbulent choruses, war chants and pulse pounding drums', in additional to re-imaginings of melodies and motifs from Warcraft's past, reforged by Hellscream's influence. However, players must not forget the properous draenei civilisation that populated Draenor, and the soundtrack offers ethereal melodies in their plenty to portray a glimmer of hope in a war-torn world.
